From Pune
The usual route runs Pune – Katraj – Shirwal – Wai, then up the ghat road to Panchgani. It is roughly 100 km and, traffic allowing, takes between two and a half and three hours. The road is good for most of it; the climb from Wai is where the driving begins in earnest.
Leaving Pune before eight in the morning, or after the evening rush, makes a real difference. The stretch through Katraj is the bottleneck.
From Mumbai
Mumbai to Panchgani is around 240 km and generally five to six hours, most of it on the expressway to Pune and then the Pune route above. Some drivers prefer to leave the expressway earlier and come via Mahad and Poladpur, which is prettier and slower.
If you are setting out on a Friday evening, add an hour and expect company on the ghat.
By train, and then by road
There is no railway station at Panchgani. The nearest useful stations are Wathar and Satara, and many guests find it simpler to take a train to Pune and drive the last leg. Whichever you choose, the final part of the journey is a taxi — arrange it in advance rather than at the station, particularly after dark.
The last stretch, and parking
Lighthouse Villa is in a quiet residential lane, and the final approach is narrow. It is perfectly drivable in any car, but take it slowly and do not trust a map application to pick the turning for you — we will send directions with your booking, and someone can talk you in by phone.
There is off-street parking for three or four cars inside the property, so nobody is left hunting for a space on arrival.
Driving up the ghat
The ghat road is well made but it is a hill road: blind bends, buses coming the other way, and cloud that can drop the visibility in minutes during the monsoon. Use low gears on the descent rather than riding the brakes, and be prepared to give way — the local drivers know the road better than you do, and will use that knowledge.
